Apple Logic Pro

Exclusive to macOS, Apple's Logic Pro is a powerful DAW known for its intuitive user interface and an extensive library of loops and software instruments. Aiming to appeal to both amateur musicians and professional producers, Logic Pro strikes a balance between user-friendliness and advanced features. In particular, its track management system and powerful MIDI features make it a favorite in genres ranging from electronic music to film music. With the help of the Flex-Time feature, it's possible to simplify the editing of the time position of notes, beats, and other events in audio regions. You can thereby shorten or lengthen the time between specific events in an audio region. The Smart Tempo tool ensures that recordings are automatically synchronized with the project's tempo. Furthermore, Logic Pro's native plugins offer extensive mixing and mastering tools. The price for the full version is €229.99 as of May 2024.

Ableton Live

Ableton Live is suitable for both studio recording and live performances, making it a versatile choice for electronic artists and DJs. Its unique Session View allows the creation and modulation of musical ideas in real-time, inviting improvisation and experimentation. With the help of Ableton Link, an open-source technology, it is possible to sync the tempo within Ableton and other software tools across multiple devices. The interface could be challenging for some as it deviates from the traditional interface of other DAWs. The focus here is on creative application, which relegates certain mixing processes in priority. At the same time, it is the strength of the software to bring the creative process to the forefront. The price for the Essential version is €79.00, while the full version is €599.00 as of May 2024.

In addition to the score editor, Cubase offers a MIDI editor, which is particularly useful for compositions. Thanks to efficient CPU usage, the audio engine is a good choice for both experienced professionals and emerging producers. The Elements Suite costs 99.00€, while the full version costs 579.00€. Another DAW not to be underestimated, albeit in a somewhat simplified variant, also comes from Apple and is pre-installed on all Apple Mac devices, although one of these devices is a prerequisite for the free software. This DAW shines with its user-friendliness and is therefore perfect for beginners taking their first steps in music production. Despite its simplicity, GarageBand offers many features that one would expect from more expensive professional DAWs. With the intuitive interface, you can effortlessly record instrument tracks, perform editing and mixing tasks, and even browse through an extensive library of loops and samples to enhance your creations. The French DJ duo "Justice" has often stated in interviews that they have used loops from Garage Band in the past. Free and pre-installed on all Mac models as of May 2024.
