What is your artist name? Can you tell us a bit about the genesis of your project?

Hello, my name is Knowsum. I'm a singer and producer from Berlin and I make genre-fluid music somewhere between indie dreampop, lofi beats and jazz funk. I started out as a classic hip-hop producer, until I realised that I found the samples used for it at least as cool, which led me to write songs inspired by the sound of the 70s.

How did you get into music and who are your influences?

At the age of 10, my dad gave me a music game (Music 2000) for the Playstation 1 and since then I've been hooked on making music. Too many people have inspired me musically to name them all. However, the strongest influences are interpersonal relationships, the resulting emotions and the jazz of existence.

Who has inspired or accompanied you on your journey, and how?

A long-time companion of mine is Nepumuk, a German-speaking rapper for whom I have produced a number of beats. We have a symbiotic relationship and the same love for funky basslines.

How would you describe your music or your sound?

Embracing, detailed and a bit freaky.

What was the most formative experience in your career so far?

My birth.

Can you tell us about the highs and lows of your musical career? How did you overcome them and what did you learn from them?

The highs of my musical endeavours are the music-making itself and when people I meet become friends. The lows relate to everything financial, because music shouldn't serve a (monetary) purpose for me, but is enough as an end in itself.

How did you come across MusicHub and why did you choose our platform?

Through GEMA. I use MusicHub because I've had great support here so far. Problems are solved quickly. Uploading songs is easy and you have a good, user-friendly overview.

What goals do you still want to achieve? What are your plans for the future?

I would like to perform with live bands more often in the future, as I'm a big fan of live music. Of course, it's also fun to perform over a played instrumental, but it's a different vibe when you're making music with several people. I would also like to work more with visual artists in the future. To a certain extent, I think it's cool to design everything myself, but you shouldn't close yourself off to the expertise of people who only deal with illustrations, for example, and learn to hand things over to others.
